DIVA: Project #6 – Self Portrait Video

14 Apr

“The 2 of Us”, 2011, Video, 02’18 (02’27-Installation Version), Video Version & Installation Version

“The 2 of Us” is a compiled video clips of footages that plays as the artist’s self-portrait. The video consists of various clips of the artist and her dog, as well as daily activities that happen during the day. The presentation of the video was screened onto a bed sheet held up by the artist herself to further emphasize the purpose of the self-portrait video.

“The 2 of Us” contains many footages from the artist’s view, her dog’s view as well as scenes of both of them. The artist came across this approach through editing through her previous work where she initially had a different story plot planned out. William Wegman, who photographs his dogs as well as films them, also inspired the artist on her piece. The challenge of interacting and working with animals was one of the artist’s great achievements in this work.

The 2 of Us

12 Apr

So I decided to change the entire story line I had in mind for the last project. I have filmed a series of clips of me and the dog throughout the day and decided to focus this video on the two of us. Black and white clips represent the vision of the dog. The first one is the installation of the video, the second one is actual screened video. Enjoy! :D

Charcoal; A Classic

7 Apr

The other day, I visited a one of a kind sushi and bbq restaurant. Charcoal is located in the heart of Richmond and it’s cuisine that serves authentic Japanese food and as well, basic Korean barbeque. The restaurant is very nicely renovated and even though the seating capacity is small, you still feel very spacious in it’s tight surroundings. The restaurant’s theme colour is red and black, a very classy combination.

For their food, aside from regular sushi roles, they have a chef selection of funky rolls. Ones contain cream cheese, mango, and smoked salmon, a variety of all choices. My favorite were the ones with mango and cream cheese, although it sounds like an odd combination, you will be surprised how the two can actually create such an awesome taste. Their appetizers are definitely worth a try too. Especially the flying fish!

Although there is Korean barbeque, I personally didn’t think it was anything special compared to other Korean barbeque restaurants. The only thing special would probably be the sauce it was marinated in. However, they come in very small portions, not very filling for meat-lovers.

Sadly, I don’t have any pictures taken for this restaurant as I had forgotten my camera at home. >< Please view the website for their menu! They include some pictures as well! (:

So this is what I have so far. One minute teaser! :D I have used my dance clips as a sort of divider between clips. And the rest are pretty much hand held filmed videos.

Twinkle… 2!

31 Mar

*More photos under cut!

I have always loved stars in my entire life! They carry a deep sense of meaning to me, in various forms and representation. Like hope, dreams, shine, and in some cases, they even represent the people I idolize; a sense of untouchable. (No pun intended, really. Haha.) Anyhow, that’s not the purpose of this post. So, approaching finals and the last weeks of school, it has been very hectic. So please bare with me as I would not have enough time to visit various restaurants.

I had some spare time the other night and decided to call a friend out for a drink at a bubble tea cafe. I chose the restaurant called TWINKLE². A funny story is that there’s a TWINKLE just two blocks up! I love this place because of all the stars they decorated the interior with and all the vibrant colored toys they have on display. The ambiance was definitely a good 100% since it’s comfortable and visually beautiful. Also, the cafe provides various entertainment like cards, board games and magazines for customers to read. They also have free WI-FI, making a good place for study groups to hang out at.

Of course, how can we forget bubble tea? As many of you know, bubble tea contains tapioca pearls (the ‘bubble’) which are black and chewy. However, at TWINKLE², they substitute ‘star jello’ for tapioca pearls in their drinks. They also have a vast selection of beverages, each having their own unique name. For example: Little Red Riding hood (photo with red drink), which really is just strawberry flavored with bits from here and there. Some other ones are called WHATEVER, FIRST LOVE, SHREK, BLUE BEACH and a lot more. They also have a list of fizz soda named after the seven dwarfs from Snow White! Creativity flows throughout the menu. As for food, they serve ordinary snacks and meals. I wouldn’t really go there for it’s food cause it’s not special. but the drinks are a definite must!

Name: TWINKLE²
Location: #125-8291 Alexandra Road, Richmond
Parking: Free Parking Lot
Type: Cafe
Price Range: approx. $5 for a drink

The Me in Me

31 Mar

For my final project in DIVA 200, we are approaching the medium of recorded film along the lines of a self portrait. I have decided to compile a series of video clips that I have recorded day-to-day by hand with intervals of professional edited clips of myself physically in the frame. Since this is a ‘self-portrait’ I have decided to take on the idea of ‘self’ for presentation. I will project the video on a white t-shirt on my body to emphasize on this idea.

The body project inspiration came from the mapping project on Frank Gehry’s IAC in New York as a part of the Vimeo film festival. (Image at top.) The idea to break the traditional 2D projection triggered my thoughts to have it projected on my body to further state the intention of a self portrait video, whether the video is  of me in frame.

The background sound is recorded from a friend to replayed one of my favorite hits, Day by Day by BIG BANG, on acoustic guitar to give a sort of atmosphere to the piece.

My Own Burger Shack

24 Mar

*more photos under cut!

Over the weekend, I finally had the opportunity to visit Vera’s Burger Shack. I’ve always wanted to visit this place because I’ve always been fascinated by things that have the same name as me. (due to the fact being Vera is a very unpopular name. sadly, haha) I did have a very funny experience here. When I made my order, I was asked for my name so she could call me up when it was ready. I told the cashier my name was Vera and she didn’t believe me. She asked me the second time, and I still told her “Vera”. She wasn’t buying. She said, “I’m serious. I need your name for order up.” I told her “I’m serious too. My name is Vera!” and she didn’t say much after that. Haha.

Vera’s Burger Shack has been said to be one of the greatest burger places in town. Perhaps you may all have eaten burgers, but at Vera’s Burger Shack, their patties are pretty thick compared to most places. They also have a series of sauces you can add to your burger, with Vera sauce being their most popular one. The meal comes with a drink as well as a side dish of fresh cut fries, which is pretty break in portion compared to other fast foods. If you have a love for burger, this is one you should try!

Name: Vera’s Burger Shack

Parking: Street Meter
